Liberty Humane Society Helps NJ Family Save Their Dog’s Life
"They weren't ready to let Lola go, but they didn't know what to do," a Hudson County animal shelter wrote.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Since launching Hudson County’s first low-cost public spay/neuter program last year, the Liberty Humane Society (LHS) has provided care to thousands of pets. But it’s one specific case – Lola – that recently brought a smile to the faces of the nonprofit animal shelter’s staff.
Last month, in honor of World Spay Day, the LHS shared the story of Lola, an unspayed dog who was suffering from a life-threatening illness.
LHS staff wrote in an email:

“Lola’s family knew she was sick. She was lethargic and weak, and lacked her usual spark. Lola’s owner took her to the vet and learned that she was suffering from pyometra, a painful infection that can occur in dogs who are not spayed. Lola needed emergency surgery to save her life, but her family couldn’t afford such a major unexpected expense. They weren’t ready to let Lola go, but they didn’t know what to do.”
Luckily, the LHS was able to step in, executive director Irene Borngraeber told Patch.
“[We] arranged for Lola’s surgery to be performed by our shelter veterinarian at a deeply discounted price,” Borngraeber said. “LHS also covered the majority of the surgery costs and allowed Lola’s family to make small repayments over time for the remainder.”

The pooch is now “happy and healthy” and back at home, the LHS stated.
