Man Dies After Being Found Unresponsive In North Jersey Jail Cell: Prosecutor

A Jersey City man was found unresponsive in a North Jersey jail cell, prosecutors said Saturday.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — An inmate in the Hudson County jail died on Friday afternoon, according to officials.

Derrick Ellis, 63, of Jersey City was pronounced dead at Jersey City Medical Center shortly before 1:30 p.m., the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.

Prosecutors said that on Friday, around 12:15 p.m., staff of the Hudson County Correctional Facility found Ellis unresponsive in his cell in the medical unit.

Officers and onsite medical personnel immediately gave Ellis aid before taking him to the hospital.
