Missing Dog Rescued On Mother's Day After Running Through Holland Tunnel In Jersey City

"Bailey," a puppy, was missing from New York for 5 days before he ran through the Holland Tunnel into NJ and wound up on a ledge.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — "Bailey," a mixed breed shepherd puppy, is now safe after he had a harrowing adventure on Mother's Day in (and out of) the Holland Tunnel in New Jersey.

Port Authority police officers said that the shepherd mix disappeared from New York City last week. At approximately 9:15 a.m. on Mother’s Day, the Holland Tunnel desk received a call of a loose dog in the North Tube of the tunnel.

Upon responding, Port Authority Police officers observed the dog exit the tunnel into Jersey City and run into the parking lot of the Home Depot on 12th Street.

Bailey then got trapped outside on a ledge on the second floor of a parking garage, police said, squeezed against a fence and in danger of falling.

Port Authority Emergency Services contacted the Jersey City Police Department and animal control. Then, Port Authority Officer Andrew Vignapiano donned safety equipment and stepped onto the ledge. He was able to capture the dog.

The NYPD 1st Precinct told the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey that the dog had been missing for five days.

In fact, someone had taken video of the same dog galloping through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel on Saturday. The Port Authority confirmed for Patch that it was the same dog.

On Sunday the pooch was brought to the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City for further treatment.

Animal control estimated Bailey to be about seven months old, a male and an Akita and shepherd mixed breed, the Port Authority said.
