JERSEY CITY, NJ — If you see something unusual near the supermarket in downtown Jersey City on Wednesday, you're not imagining it.

A trio of "nearly nude PETA supporters" will be at Jersey City's relatively new Whole Foods Supermarket around noon to protest what they say are misleading labels about the treatment of animals used for food products.

The supporters will be "covered in 'blood' and lying on giant meat trays wrapped in cellophane—complete with spoof 'humane' labels," says People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an animal advocacy organization.

They say that they're taking aim at the "bogus certification scheme used to market the flesh of animals and dupe kind consumers into paying more for the same old cruelty."

Whole Foods responded Tuesday, “We take any allegation of animal abuse very seriously. We can confirm that neither of the suppliers mentioned by PETA are sold in our stores and have not been for several years."

When PETA protested at the supermarket's opening in 2023 — using an 8-foot monkey to raise concerns about animal labor — Whole Foods said animal labor wasn't used in their products, and that they take such issues seriously. This past November, PETA said the animal labor had stopped.
