JERSEY CITY, NJ — A popular restaurant in downtown Jersey City announced Tuesday night they have closed.
Kitchen Step, located on Jersey Avenue, had served residents of the Van Vorst neighborhood since 2016.

The owner said that they couldn't agree with the landlord on a new lease.
Cory Checket wrote in a message, "It is with profound sadness that we announce The Kitchen Step has closed its doors ... This restaurant has always been a true passion project for Joe, Chef Ryan, and myself. ...Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to secure new lease terms that work for the business. As Kenny Rogers once said, 'You gotta know when to hold ’em, and know when to fold ’em.' "

Residents and other business owners expressed their disappointment.
"This is so sad, the end of a staple of our neighborhood!" wrote Chocopain, a local café chain, on social media. "Hope you find a new place soon!"
The owners promised, "This isn’t a goodbye forever, just a pause. We are actively exploring a new location and have other exciting news on the horizon that we can’t wait to share with you soon."
