HOBOKEN, NJ — Fear not, pizza fans: Verizza Pizza — a gourmet pizza restaurant on Newark Street that closed suddenly two weeks ago — will reopen in September as, well, a pizza restaurant. David Carney, the manager of the popular Madison Bar and Grill on 14th Street in Hoboken, confirmed Tuesday night that he'll be transforming the spot into Madison Pizza.

Verizza, located behind City Hall, had opened on Newark Street just last fall. It quickly gained a following, but announced earlier this month via email to its customers that its owners had "served our final slice."

The owners said there was "something new" coming to 152 Newark St. in the near future.

What's new is that Carney, known for the successful bar/restaurant at the northern end of busy Washington Street, has bought the location and will reopen as a gourmet pizza shop, he confirmed Tuesday.

While Hoboken is full of interesting pizza joints (see stories below), Verizza earned attention for including unique varieties of pizza and toppings such as tuna.

The historic location was a cigar shop during World War II (SEE 1943 photo here).

On Tuesday, TAPInto Hoboken reported that Carney became one of the fans of Verizza before it closed, and that Carney's own bar pies at the Madison had gotten "high marks."

While you wait for the new shop, Hoboken has its share of other pizzerias to try, new and old, brick oven and classic. (Which pizza would you recommend in Hoboken? Comment below!)

And Food and Wine Magazine recently said New Jersey has the best pizza in the country, naming two Jersey City pizzerias among the best in the state.
