As difficult as it is to imagine, it’s August. Even harder to imagine; we’re just weeks away from September. That means sweaters. Pumpkin spice. School buses. And?
~Pottery~.
If you’ve never hopped on the wheel or wedged your own clay, or if those particular words form a sentence you don’t fully understand but make you feel something flutter behind your belly button, let me tell you about Blue Skies. Blue Skies Pottery is a community ceramic studio for people of all backgrounds and experience levels. Our studio schedule reflects this diverse community: we offer 90-minute introductory workshops, 7-week instructed courses, studio memberships, and special events for both adults and children. We’ve also recently begun establishing our much-anticipated special needs program.
We’ve found that the biggest hurdle to beginning pottery is time. Egos and nerves quickly melt away, and we frequently work with students on the financial component of joining, but one thing we have to appreciate is that your time is valuable and not everyone has a schedule that can accommodate throwing themselves into a new art form. Our one piece of advice? Try. Try to make the time or identify parts of your schedule that can be shuffled around. Maybe at first you want to join the 7-week course but can only manage a one-time class on a random Saturday. Do it. The truth is the only thing rivaling the number of pots that fill our studio is the number of times a student or member has told us pottery changed their lives. They handle stress differently, interact with friends and family in new ways, and legitimately see the world in a new light. Do you have any idea how much ceramic there is in your day-to-day life? Join the studio and you’ll never stop seeing it.
Our studio isn’t one year old. We’re babies. If the studio was a person, we’d still be worried about it eating the clay. Each day brings another ‘Aha!’ moment and new lessons in things we thought we knew but didn’t actually know, but the one thing we’ve had perfected since the beginning (which also happens to be the one thing we don’t control) is the community. The people who make this studio what it is are a wonderful, creative, loving, and inclusive bunch unlike any other we’ve ever encountered. No favor is too big or conversation too small to find a home here, so while we wind down summer and you start to plan for what you’d like your year to look like; come check out our studio and see if it’s something you’d like to join. We’d love to have you.
