Free Radon Test Kits Will Be Available To Holmdel Residents
A limited number of free kits to test for this gas will be available to residents beginning Monday, officials say.
HOLMDEL, NJ — Free radon test kits are being offered to residents beginning Monday, Feb. 6, the township announced.
Residents should go to the Recreation Department window in Town Hall, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to receive a kit while supplies last. There are 155 test kits, the township said.
Holmdel Township Committee has partnered with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Radon Program to provide the test kits. The township paid for the kits and received a $2,000 DEP grant to reimburse the cost fully, the township said.

Holmdel is listed as a “Tier 1 – High Radon Potential” area by the state Department of Environmental Protection, the township said in a news release.
Radon is a gas that you can’t see, smell, or taste but it can still affect your health. Radon causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year, the township said, citing CDC figures.

Certified radon measurement businesses also provide testing services or do-it-yourself test kits. Test kits can also be obtained from many hardware stores and home improvement stores.
In his proclamation announcing Radon Action Month, Holmdel Mayor DJ Luccarelli stated, “prolonged exposure to radon can kill as many as 500 people in New Jersey each year, families who reside in homes with elevated radon levels are at risk of developing serious health problems, and any home could have high levels, even when neighboring homes do not. Radon testing can be done with great ease at a relatively low expense to the homeowner, with the cost of reducing radon concentrations being comparable to a home repair.”
During Radon Action Month, Holmdel will also provide radon information on its website and social media.
If the test indicates a radon problem, radon mitigation systems can be installed at a cost similar to that of other home repairs, the township said.
Luccarelli commented on the program, saying “the Township Committee is proud to be able to provide radon test kits to our residents to ensure they are aware of the radon levels in their homes.”
