"In an effort to give residents the ability to safely dispose of unwanted medication, local law enforcement have been very proactive in obtaining permanent drop boxes in their headquarters," reads a statement by the Center for Prevention & Counseling. "The boxes provided by the N.J. Division of Consumer Affairs, through its Project Medicine Drop initiative, are an important component of New Jersey’s effort to halt the abuse and help prevent the dangers associated with the diversion of prescription drugs."

According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, each Project Medicine Drop box is installed indoors, affixed to the floor or wall in a secure area within police department headquarters, within view of law enforcement officers, in an area to which members of the public may be admitted to dispose of their unused medications.
