Family Promise of Sussex County receives grant from Newton Medical Center Community Advisory Board

FPSC receives grant from Newton Medical Center Community Advisory Board to support the Housing Hope Emergency Shelter Program

Newton, NJ – 6/30/2025 – Family Promise of Sussex County announced today that it received a $10,000 grant from the Newton Medical Center Community Advisory Board, to support the Housing Hope Emergency Shelter, a program designed to provide short-term temporary housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Newton Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, is committed to building healthier communities. This commitment extends beyond the exceptional health care delivered in our hospitals, physician offices and facilities. Understanding and supporting the needs of our local communities is a priority for Morristown.

Newton Medical Center Community Advisory Board, a group of individuals from throughout the communities served by the hospital, the hospital’s Community Health Advisory Committee and the Newton Medical Center Community Health Department, working with the Atlantic Health System Planning Department, identified priority health needs within the community, using robust data analysis and a community stakeholder survey.

The Community Advisory Board awarded grants to ten recipient organizations who proposed initiatives that address one or more priority health needs in the 2025 grant period.

The Housing Hope Emergency Shelter program includes two leased units that provide temporary emergency housing to individuals and families experiencing homelessness, along with intensive case management and supportive services that assist with the transition to permanent housing. The Housing Hope program also includes emergency hotel or motel stays for clients who are extremely vulnerable and urgently in need of shelter when the leased units are full. This service is vital during the bitterly cold winter weather the county sees every year and the sometimes dangerously hot summer days.

Homelessness is a growing problem across the country as housing costs continue to rise to unreasonable levels and inflation makes it increasingly difficult to afford necessities like food, medication and utilities. New Jersey saw a 24% increase in homelessness between 2023 and 2024, and the percentage of the homeless population in Sussex County who were experiencing unsheltered homelessness almost doubled since 2023, from 6% to 11%. People in our community are struggling, and grants from Newton Medical Center Community Advisory Board and similar organizations help Family Promise meet the increasing need for housing support in the community.

“We are honored to help support the Housing Hope Emergency Shelter,” said Maryanne Fox, chair of the Newton Medical Center Community Advisory Board. “By working together with organizations like Family Promise of Sussex County, we can make a true impact for the better in the lives of our community members.”
