Newton, N.J. — Family Promise of Sussex County received a $15,000 grant from the John and Margaret Post Foundation to support the agency’s efforts to end homelessness in Sussex County and the surrounding area.

The John and Margaret Post Foundation supports charitable organizations that benefit the quality of life for families and society with a primary focus on organizations in northwest New Jersey and northeast Pennsylvania. The Post Foundation has been a supporter of Family Promise of Sussex County for more than a decade.

The funding will be used to provide supportive services to unsheltered and at-risk individuals and families. This can include rental assistance, hotel placements for unsheltered clients, supplying food, clothing, and personal hygiene products to households, and providing backpacks and school supplies to children experiencing a housing crisis.

Homelessness increased in Sussex County by 137% between 2022 and 2023, and more than a third of these individuals were children. Homelessness is a very real and growing problem in the area. The rising cost of living and dramatic increases in rent are making it harder for people to stay housed or obtain housing that is affordable. Donations from organizations like the Post Foundation are essential to supporting individuals and families as they work toward housing stabilization.

Flexible funding provided by the Post Foundation and other similar foundations is necessary to fill in the gaps left from other funding sources, like government grant funding. This funding also allows the agency to provide services to more individuals and families, and to ensure that services like the agency food bank have sufficient funding.
