Franklin Woman Wins 2016 Municipal Alliance Volunteer of the Year For Sussex

Elaine Tizzano was chosen because of her work in organizing the Changing the Face of Addiction Walk, officials said.

SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J.– A Franklin woman who organized the Changing the Face of Addiction Walk to memorialize her son and another Hardyston/Franklin resident that died from heroin addictions was named Sussex County's 2016 Municipal Alliance Volunteer of the Year.

Elaine Tizzano started the walk last year for her son George, and Eric Burns.

Tizzano and Mary Burns worked with the Center for Prevention and Counseling of Newton to create the event.

According to Sussex County officials, the purpose of the walk is to "change how addiction and individuals who

struggle with substance use disorders are perceived."

Over 300 people attended the August walk, which raised over $20,000, Sussex County officials said in a press release.

All of the proceeds went to The Center for Prevent, the release states.

Tizzano, an elementary school teacher, is a the co-chair of the Franklin/Hardyston Municipal Alliance Committee.

She was honored by the Sussex County Board of Freeholders on Oct. 26.
