SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — Members of Ron and Sons Towing have launched an online fundraiser following the untimely death of an employee.

On June 2, tow truck operator Daniel “DJ” Ortiz, 24 of Hopatcong, was assisting a disabled vehicle on the shoulder of I-287 southbound just north of Exit 30 when a Jeep slammed into him, his tow truck, and the car in distress.

Ortiz was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

“DJ was more than just a dedicated worker; he was a son, a friend, and a valuable part of our community. His kindness, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to his job touched the lives of so many. Whether it was lending a hand to someone in need or offering a word of encouragement, DJ’s positive spirit never went unnoticed,” the GoFundMe statement read. “In this difficult time, we want to support DJ's family as they navigate through this heartbreaking loss. All funds raised will go directly to helping his family cover funeral costs, medical expenses, and to provide support during this difficult period.”

According to Ron and Sons Towing representatives, all proceeds will be delivered by check to Ortiz’s sister, Diana Boralsky, “ensuring everything goes straight into the hands of his family.”

Representatives of Ron and Sons Towing have expressed the importance of “moving over” when tow trucks and emergency vehicles are on the shoulder of the road. Since 2009, it has been NJ law to change lanes away from roadway workers when possible. If moving over is not possible, drivers should reduce their speed “to a reasonable and proper speed for the existing road and traffic conditions,” and be prepared to stop.

“We ask that you please consider donating in DJ's memory, and if you are unable to give, we would greatly appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and the sharing of this campaign to help spread the word. Every little bit helps, and no donation is too small,” the GoFundMe read. “Thank you for your kindness, support, and love during this incredibly difficult time. DJ’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.”

So far, the fundraiser has received more than $40,000 in donations.
