Possible Tornado Damage At NJ School, Reports Say

STANHOPE, NJ — There is possible damage to a North Jersey high school after reports of a tornado Tuesday night.

A tornado hit Lenape Valley High School in Stanhope, ABC 7 and News4 New York reported. The school will be closed on Wednesday, officials announced on its website. That announcement did not give a reason for the closure.

Students were in the school for an event when the storm hit, News 12 NJ reported; everyone has been evacuated, and there are no injuries. The Sussex County Sheriff's Office described the storm as a "weather event."

Lots of damage was reported at homes in Roxbury and other areas. Patch will have more information as it comes in. Nearly 2,000 people were without power.

The National Weather Service said they would be in Sussex County on Wednesday conducting a storm survey; they confirmed a tornado touched down near Morgantown in Berks County, P.A.

Patch has reached out to the Sheriff's Office, the Stanhope Police Department and the school for more information.

Most of Stanhope is without power as of 10:15 p.m.; JCP&L says 1,476 of their 1,677 customers are in the dark. The current estimated time of restoration is 12:30 a.m.
