SPARTA TWP., N.J. – Sparta Township Police are among 176 departments across New Jersey that will now outfit their officers with body-worn cameras after the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office approved $2.5 million in funding for the equipment statewide.

Sparta requested $15,000 for 30 total cameras and were approved Monday.

Other Sussex County departments receiving grants were Hamburg Borough; Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, Newton, and Vernon Township.

The $2.5 million in funding comes from criminal forfeiture funds, Hoffman said.

“We clearly are leading the nation when it comes to our efforts in New Jersey to deploy body-worn cameras to promote transparency and mutual accountability of police and civilians,” said Acting Attorney General Hoffman. “The overwhelming response we received from law enforcement to our offer of funding demonstrates that police officers are embracing this technology to protect themselves, assist them in their work, and foster stronger police-community relations.”
