A Taxi Driver’s Good Deed Helped Him Meet The Love Of His Life

"Sixty years, four children and 11 grandchildren later, we are still together."

For this month's Love In A Small Town feature, we asked Patch readers to tell us the story behind their romantic chance encounters. This is Jim Hertzig's story:

It was early September in 1957. One late night I had the night shift working in a local taxi. At around midnight I looked up at the corner and saw two young people at the bus stop. Knowing that the last bus ran through town 15 minutes ago, I walked up to investigate.

I knew the young man standing there. His older brother and I were good friends. Well, the young girl with him was from the Bronx. She said that she didn’t know how she would get back home at this late hour as the next bus wouldn’t arrive until seven in the morning. I told them that I was going off duty in a few minutes and would drive her home in my own car.

I did, and a few days later I saw the girl in town. I asked her if she would date me. She agreed, and we went on dates often. A few months later I asked her to marry me. Sixty years, four children and 11 grandchildren later, we are still together.
