Expect Route 524 Detours For State Railroad Project In Howell

Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/Route 524 will be closed for railroad crossing repairs next week in Howell. Detours will be in place.

HOWELL, NJ — Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/Route 524 is scheduled to be closed and detoured next week between West Farms Road and Imlay Lane in Howell, the state Department of Transportation announced.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, July 31, until 7 a.m. Friday, August 4, Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/Route 524 will be closed in both directions between West Farms Road and Imlay Lane to remove the existing railroad crossing.

The closure is necessary to reconstruct the crossing and approaches. Access will be maintained for local traffic.

The following detours will be in place:

Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/Route 524 eastbound detour:

  • Motorists on Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/Route 524 eastbound will be directed turn right onto West Farms Road.
  • Turn left onto Squankum-Yellowbrook Road/Route 524A.
  • Turn left onto Southard Avenue.
  • Turn left onto Main Street/Route 524.
  • Keep left to continue on West Main Street/Route 524, which becomes Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/Route 524.

Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/CR 524 westbound detour:

  • Motorists wishing to take West Main Street/Route 524 to Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/Route 524 westbound will be directed to take on Main Street/Route 524 southbound.
  • Turn right onto Southard Avenue.
  • Turn right onto Squankum-Yellowbrook Road/Route 524A.
  • Turn left onto West Farms Road, back to Adelphia-Farmingdale Road/Route 524.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing, the existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and asphalt approaches.

This federally funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 50 crossings each year statewide, the agency says.
