Howell Township Mourns Loss Of First Aid And Rescue Founder

Howell Township First Aid & Rescue Squad patriarch and founder John Menschner Sr. has died.

HOWELL, NJ — The founder and patriarch of the Howell Township First Aid & Rescue Squad #1., John Menschner Sr., has died at 95.

According to a social media post by members of the Howell Township First Aid & Rescue Squad, Menschner moved to Howell back in 1955 where he started the town's initial first aid squad. "To meet new people and find potential members for a squad, John joined the Southard Fire Dept. No.1. After a couple of years and assistance with the township, who gave $1,000 to help get us going, John and a group of 9 Charter Members started the Howell Twp First Aid & Rescue Squad #1."

The Howell First Aid & Rescue Squad would become officially incorporated in February 1957.

"If it wasn’t for him, the squad and all of its members would not be here today, 65 years later," said John Zicha, the Howell First Aid & Rescue President. "Countless lives have been forever changed because of this man, because of his leadership and sincere dedication to the township of Howell. Without John, lives would not have been saved.,"continued Zicha.

John Menschner, Sr., was a dedicated public servant for over 70 years. In 2020, the Howell First Aid Squad created a video on the history of the organization where they interviewed Menschner.
