NJ Weekend Weather: Thunderstorms Likely At Jersey Shore

Heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning and strong winds are predicted to hit NJ amid the latest heat wave this weekend. Here's what to expect

JERSEY SHORE - Don’t pack your beach bags just yet, New Jersey: thunderstorms are expected to hit the shore this weekend, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, excessive heat and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.

The National Weather Service says that, while Friday should be clear, thunderstorms are likely between 5 and 11 p.m. on Saturday and after 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The weekend is also slated to see high temperatures around the 90-degree mark at the Jersey Shore. A heat advisory has been issued for 14 counties across the state, including Monmouth and Ocean. Read more: Severe Storms Loom In Parts Of NJ As Heat Index Soars Over 100

"Hot conditions could result in heat exhaustion with prolonged exposure," the National Weather Service said. "Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.”

"Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk," the agency continued. "Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures," the agency said. "Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors."

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. South wind 5 to 10 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 74. South wind 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 5 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. South wind 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 11 p.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. South wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
