Road Closings In Howell Planned For Railroad Crossing Repairs

Okerson Road to be closed for railroad crossing repairs next week. Detours set by state Department of Transportation.

HOWELL, NJ — Okerson Road is scheduled to be closed and detoured next week between Park Avenue and Willow Brook Road in Howell, state transportation officials said.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, June 12, until 5 p.m. Friday, June 16, Okerson Road will be closed in both directions between Park Avenue and Willow Brook Road to reestablish the railroad crossing.

Access will be maintained for local traffic. The following detours will be in place:

Okerson Road eastbound detour:

  • Motorists on Okerson Road eastbound will be directed to turn left onto Willow Brook Road.
  • Turn right onto Halls Mill Road/Route 55 northbound.
  • Take the ramp to Route 33 Business/Manalapan/Howell.
  • Turn right onto Park Avenue/Route 33 Business eastbound, back to Okerson Road.

Okerson Road westbound detour:

  • Motorists on Park Avenue/Route 33 Business wishing to turn onto Okerson Road westbound will be directed to continue on Park Avenue/Route 33 Business westbound.
  • Go under Halls Mill Road/Route 55.
  • Turn left to take the ramp to Halls Mill Road/Route 55 southbound.
  • Turn left onto Willow Brook Road, back to Okerson Road.

The existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and asphalt approaches to male for a safer and smoother crossing.

This federally-funded project is included in state DOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program that repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 50 crossings each year statewide, the DOT said.

The timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
