5 Things: Facts About Thomas Jefferson

Here's what you need to know about our township's namesake.

Today is Presidents’ Day, the day we honor all those who have led our country. And in Jefferson, we honored one of them, Thomas Jefferson, by naming our town after him. So, in tribute to Thomas Jefferson, here are five things you need to know about our third president.

  1. Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia on April 13, 1743. He was the third of ten children.
  2. He attended the College of William and Mary at age 16 and became a lawyer after college.
  3. Not only was Jefferson a signer of the Declaration of Independence, he wrote the document in 1776.
  4. He was vice president from 1797 – 1801 and president from 1801-1809.
  5. Jefferson’s likeness is on the two-dollar bill and nickel.
