5 Things: Fire Safety In Your Home
The Jefferson Township Fire Bureau offers certification criteria.

How is your home’s fire safety quotient? The Jefferson Township Fire Bureau says on its website that residential property must be checked for a Smoke Detector, Carbon Monoxide Detector and Fire Extinguisher Certification at the time of resale or change of tenant on a rental property. Here are things you would need to get that certification. Check and make sure your home is up to snuff.
- Smoke Detector: At least one must be on each level of the home, and one must be within 10 feet of all bedrooms.
- Carbon Monoxide Detector: One must be within 10 feet of all bedrooms. Electric units must be installed in a hallway, not in one bedroom, even if that bedroom is within 10 feet of other bedrooms.
- House Number: A house number that is visible from the road must be on the house. It must be a minimum of three inches high; numbers on the mailbox do not count, as those are postal property.
- Fire Extinguisher: At least one portable unit must be within 10 feet of the kitchen. The extinguisher must meet several criteria. Check here to see what they are.
- Inspections: These are done by appointment on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Call 973-208-9400 for an appointment.
