5 Things: Help Yourself by Helping Others

Check out the United Way's mentoring program.

Are you looking for a way to help people? Maybe start off the new year with a new focus? The United Way can help you become a mentor. Here's what you need to know:

  1. What? Mentoring is teaching others how to do something, or teaching them something new.
  2. Why? Mentoring can help you by helping others. It helps build confidence and develop stronger interpersonal skills.
  3. Where? You can mentor people almost anywhere. But first you have to attend training classes, given by the United Way. There's one tonight starting at 6 p.m. At the United Way's office in Cedar Knolls.
  4. What You'll Learn: Problem-solving skills, roles and responsibilities of a mentor and how to help the mentee set and achieve goals.
  5. What To Do Next: Preregister for the program. Click here for more information.
