How Do You Talk To Your Kids About Disaster?

There is a lot on television and in life parents would prefer their children not witness–violence in movies, vulgarity, foul language.

But, sometimes, there are some things children cannot–or, perhaps, should not–have their eyes averted from.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan has destroyed, and taken, the lives of many. The videos that have been shown on television are almost too amazing to think true–the waves of water carrying vehicles, boats like they are toys downstream. The horror is almost too much for an adult to comprehend, let alone a developing child.

Whether your child is too young to really grasp life and death, or has reached a more advanced age, when it comes time for them to ask about what they saw on the news, or heard about in school, what do you say to them? Chime in in our comments section below.
