Four sixth grade band students, Melanie Miller, Ani Bahl, Ryan Schmidt, and Liam Tedford, had the opportunity to be the first groups to participate in the First Annual North Jersey Elementary Honors Band Festival on May 5.
Three different bands consisting of more than 250 students participated in the concert. The students were nominated by their band director, Lauren Kulick, and were chosen by a committee of music directors from all over Northern New Jersey.
The bands rehearsed at Columbia High School in Maplewood in different areas of the high school all morning. After some pizza and meeting new friends, the students went back into rehearsals until 2 p.m., the students performed the pieces that they had been working on all day in front of an audience of about 1,000, including family, friends, and teachers.
