Middle School Students Raising Funds To End Modern-Day Slavery

Classes looking to help shed light on problem.

Over the course of the next two weeks students at the will be educated on topics pertaining to slavery both from a historical perspective and in our modern world. Eighth grade GATEways students and students in Dan Papa’s Social Studies classes will be presenting these issues to all students and will kick off a fundraiser to raise money that will be donated to a charity to help end modern-day slavery.

These students, emulating past residents of Jefferson who provided a stop on the Underground Railroad, are seeking to start an abolitionist movement beginning right here at the middle school to help abolish slavery again.

According to the United Nations, more slaves exist today than ever before. An estimated 27 million people are enslaved; many are slaves in the United States and right here in New Jersey.

Students will be selling wristbands and t-shirts. Lanterns will be hung around the school to shed light on the issue and to show that the students support human rights and want to end slavery once and for all.
