School Board Certifies Election, OKs New Assistant Superintendent

The Jefferson Township Board of Education had a short but busy night at its Nov. 18. AIM Jefferson reported that in the space of less than half an hour, the body certified Nov. 5 election tallies, named township middle school principal Jeanne Howe as the new assistant superintendent and approved a shared services agreement with the municipality.

At the beginning of 2014, the school board will welcome the official winners of the Nov. 5 election: Incumbents Matthew Millar, who received 2,218 votes, and Edward Quigley, who garnered 2,231, will keep their seats. Challenger Danielle Rowan was the number-one vote getter, winning 2,299 votes. She will replace outgoing BOE member Cynthia Scott, who did not run for re-election, the article said.

The school board approved a resolution accepting the appointment of Jefferson Township Middle School principal Jeanne Howe to replace retiring Dr. Mary Thornton starting Jan, 1, 2014. Superintendent of Schools Joseph Kraemer said a search for Thornton's replacement will start soon.

The board also okayed a 10-year agreement with Jefferson Township in which the school district would provide auto and bus maintenance facilities and services it now uses for its own school vehicles with the municipality for a fee of $47 per hour. The pact stipulates that the rate is not set in stone and may increase from year to year. Details must be finalized, the article said, and the agreement does not include roadside service, breakdowns or accidents.
