Emergency Sewer Repairs To Close Route 440: See Detours
An emergency sewer main replacement project will close Route 440 in both directions in Jersey City and Bayonne for the next few weeks.

BAYONNE, NJ - An emergency sewer main replacement project will close Route 440 in both directions in Jersey City and Bayonne for the next several weeks, officials said.
Starting Monday at 10 a.m., Route 440 will be closed northbound from Route 185 in Bayonne to Danforth Avenue and southbound from Cammunipaw Avenue to Route 185, officials from Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority said in a statement.
The project comes as aid to an over 100-year-old sewer main that collapsed 17 feet below ground at RT 440 and Danforth Avenue, officials said.

“To help direct drivers during construction, variable message signs (VMS boards) will be located throughout the project footprint.
Jersey City police will also be directing traffic at some intersections. JCMUA will have flaggers to assist at necessary locations as well, the authority said.

Here’s a list of access points, street closures and detours, according to JCMUA:
Route 440 Northbound
- Route 440 north of the Kellogg Street intersection will remain open to traffic.
- Motorists traveling north on Route 440 from Bayonne (i.e., Pulaski Street) will be detoured to the NJ Turnpike.
- Danforth Avenue: Closed to westbound traffic from West Side Avenue. Access to local businesses only. No Access to Route 440.
- Country Village Access Points: Sycamore Road, Bartholdi Avenue and Winfield Avenue.
- Society Hill and Stadium Plaza access points will only be accessible via Carbon Place and Culver Avenue. Make a left onto Rt. 440 south and a right onto Kellogg St.
- Access Points to all Businesses South of Communipaw Avenue (Hudson Mall to Stadium Plaza): Bennett St. jug handle Claremont Avenue Carbon Pl. Culver Avenue.
- Access to Home Depot and Raymour & Flanigan: Parking lot entrance from Gothics Knights Road.
Route 440 Southbound
- Rt. 440 south ramp at Communipaw Avenue will have no southbound traffic.
- Vehicles traveling over the Lincoln Highway Bridge (Communipaw Bridge) coming into Jersey City will be diverted north (left) onto Route 1&9 or continue east (straight) onto Communipaw Avenue towards Mallory Avenue.
- Vehicles traveling south on Rt. 1&9 towards Communipaw Avenue from Duncan Avenue will be diverted west (right) to continue onto Route 1&9 south or diverted east (left) onto Communipaw Avenue.
- Existing parking regulations along Communipaw Avenue will be strictly enforced to maintain traffic flow during rush hour: 7 to 9 a.m. weekdays 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays.
Truck Traffic Detours
Commercial trucks will be able to continue eastbound on Communipaw Avenue to Garfield Avenue and are encouraged to use NJ Turnpike exit 14A for access to Port Jersey. Commercial trucks are also encouraged to use NJ Turnpike exit 14B for access to E. Linden Avenue sites.
