Smith is a first-generation Caribbean-American interdisciplinary artist based in Jersey City, NJ where he maintains a studio at Mana Contemporary. Through found object sculpture, mixed media drawing, performance, photography, sound, video, and writing, Nyugen deepens his knowledge of historical and present-day conditions of Black African descendants in the diaspora. Nyugen launched his prolific series Bundlehouse in 2005 consisting of mixed media, assemblage and sculptural works and is centered around forced migration. The New York Times’s art review by Siddhartha Mitter and Will Heinrich, on September 8, 2022, lists Sean Horton (Presents) (Platform #7) one-person show, Nyugen E. Smith, as one of the favorite booths at this year’s Armory Show.
Given the meteoric rise of Smith’s career, Art Fair 14C is an incomparable opportunity to present Smith’s work to local art collectors and art enthusiasts.

“I recently relocated my new studio to Mana Contemporary. I appreciate the warm welcome and support I have received by both the community and the Mana Team, “ expressed Nyugen E. Smith. “I am excited to be exhibiting with Mana Contemporary at Jersey City's Art Fair 14C - in my hometown.”
“Over the past two years we have been defining the direction of our content in a meaningful and consistent way, focused on social issues, giving voice to diverse artists, and being representative of the communities in which Mana resides. Nyugen E. Smith is a primary example of that focus and commitment,” explained Kele McComsey, Director of Mana Contemporary.
Mana Contemporary has mounted several exhibitions about climate change and immigration/migration. As part of its commitment to address critical issues facing society, Mana Contemporary provides a support network for local emerging and marginalized artists focused on societal issues.
“Mana Contemporary is a unique institution that nurtures artists in all stages of their artistic career. Having Jersey City’s, Nyugen E. Smith and his Bundlehouse series featured in our exhibition space reinforces this mission, “ said Kristin DeAngelis, Director of Community Outreach. “It is an extraordinary opportunity for art collectors attending Art Fair 14C to engage in this stage of Nyugen’s rapidly advancing career.”
