Opened Before Covid And Survived: Jersey City's Lokal Celebrates 5 Years
Late 2019 wasn't the best time to open a restaurant in NJ, even on the waterfront. The owner of Jersey City's Lokal shared her secrets.
JERSEY CITY, NJ — Late 2019 might not have been the most auspicious time to open an upscale restaurant. Nevertheless, Lokal — a spacious eatery on the Jersey City waterfront — has persisted.
Entrepreneur Mona Panjwani opened in downtown Jersey City just about five years ago, touting unique food and cocktails and Manhattan skyline views.
Nouveau American fare and space for gatherings made the location a popular dining and meeting spot on the waterfront.

But Panjwani had to make plans in March 2000 to shut down for a while.
"As the pandemic began only a few months after we opened Lokal, it was a period of transformation and growth for me as a business
owner," she said recently. "During COVID, we were able to open our patio dining option, which seated 60 guests, providing a safe dining experience with stunning views of the Manhattan skyline that diners still enjoy today."

In October she hosted a celebration for Lokal's fifth anniversary, having survived it through various challenges.
"The fact that we were not only able to persevere, and constantly adapt to new challenges is a testament to our resilient staff and incredible customers," Panjwani said.
Lokal is still a gathering spot for groups small and large.
The menu features dishes including herb and horseradish crusted halibut and duck rillete crostini. Special cocktails range from the sour to sweet.
The eatery is offering a special five-course prix fixe menu for New Year's Eve, including vegetarian options.
"As a restaurateur, I have learned firsthand the importance of creating a unique dining experience," she said. "I strive to never be complacent,
and always embrace innovation and new offerings to entertain and keep our guests happy. These past five years have taught me resiliency, patience and adaptability and I am grateful for the strong team."
Lokal is located at 2 Second St. on Jersey City's waterfront, walkable to the light rail train and offering a view of Lower Manhattan. Outdoor seating is available when conditions allow.
