JERSEY CITY, NJ — While NJ Transit trains stopped from Friday through Monday due to a strike, the PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) trains kept running throughout Hudson County and into Manhattan. Activists and some officials want the regional train line to run more often and to one more destination.

The PATH trains stop in Harrison, Jersey City (Several stops), Hoboken, Newark, the World Trade Center, and the west side of SoHo.

On Tuesday evening, a group called Hudson County Complete Streets held a press conference and rally outside of the PATH Station at Exchange Place in Jersey City, to announce more than 5,000 signatures on the campaign for more frequent off-peak service and a PATH extension to Newark Liberty International Airport.

The group's Better PATH Campaign has been advocated last year for two goals, as noted in their petition:

  • 5-minute off-peak PATH service on nights and weekends
  • A direct PATH extension to Newark Airport

They said that currently, PATH trains run every two minutes on weekdays during rush hour, but riders must wait 20-40 minutes off-peak on nights and weekends.

They noted that Hudson County’s rapid growth means more rides are needed. Between 2010 and 2020, the county’s population surged by 14.3 percent, nearly three times the statewide average of 5.3 percent, the group said.
