50 Years Of Hip Hop: 'Slick Rick' To Headline Juneteenth Festival In Jersey City

A Juneteenth Festival in Jersey City will highlight Black vendors and include a tribute to 50 years of hip hop with performer "Slick Rick."

JERSEY CITY, NJ — It's time to go old school. Rapper and producer Slick Rick, the third artist signed to Def Jam Records, will perform at the Juneteenth festival Monday at Liberty State Park.

The festival runs from 12-8 p.m. and requires paid tickets.

The festival is named All About Us, and will have over 40 black owned food and artisans vendors, music DJs, face painting, gaming area, photo booths for kids, and a live art exhibition from artists at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City.

The Jersey City Economic Development Corporation is co-hosting the event.

"This year's event is expected to draw people from all over Jersey City as we celebrate the historic significance of African American emancipation in America," said the announcement. "Furthermore, there will be a special performance celebrating fifty years of hip hop music anniversary with none other than Slick Rick himself!"

Originally, Richard "Slick Rick" Walters was known for his storytelling abilities in recordings like "Children's Story" and for his work with Doug E. Fresh. He has since been sampled by the most famous rappers and musicians, including Snoop Dogg, Beyonce, and Eminem.

Juneteenth, which is short for June 19th, is a 155-year-old holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Read more about it here.
