JERSEY CITY, NJ — A sinkhole that opened up near Whitman and Sip avenues in Jersey City closed part of one street early Monday morning, the city said around 8:30 a.m.

Later on Monday, at 11:36 a.m., the city Tweeted that part of Sip Avenue was still closed, with no further updates.

However, the intersection of West Side Avenue and Sip Avenue was open.

CBS reported that workers were able to rescue a backhoe before it fell in. Construction is being done at that corner.
