LACEY, NJ — One of Popcorn Park Animal Refuge's beloved animals has died.

Zoo officials announced on March 6 that Eli the tiger had died after weeks of decline.

"Despite our best efforts and the care of dedicated veterinarians, Eli's health declined in recent weeks, leading to discomfort and decreased mobility," officials said. "After exhausting all options and considering his quality of life, we made the difficult decision to say goodbye."

The tiger arrived at Popcorn Park in December 2016 with his sister, Jess. The two came from a Colorado animal facility that housed 75 tigers.

Eli spent more than eight "joyful years" at the refuge, officials said.

"His days were filled with simple pleasures - sunbathing, pond wading, and playful moments with Jess. His gentle nature and playful spirit touched the hearts of all who knew him," officials said.

Refuge officials said they hope to continue Eli's legacy by ensuring all of their animals receive the best care and love.

"Though Eli's absence is felt profoundly, we find comfort in knowing his time here raised awareness and love for endangered tigers," they said.
