NJ Ex-Elementary Principal That Sexually Assaulted Child Caught With Child Porn, Police Say
John Mangan, 78, was previously convicted in 1997 of sexually assaulting a teenager while he was a school principal.
LACEY, NJ — A repeat sex offender from Lanoka Harbor admitted in federal court to possessing child sexual abuse images, U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced.
John Mangan, 78, was previously convicted in 1997 for sexual assault of a 15-year-old, according to the New Jersey Department of Education and news reports from the time. At this time, Mangan was an elementary school principal in Ringwood; he was sentenced to four years in prison.
Mangan also has a previous federal conviction for possession of child pornography, according to court documents.

Mangan's Lanoka Harbor home was searched by the Department of Homeland Security on Oct. 29, 2024, officials said. There, they found a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 cellphone with more than 250 images of children being sexually abused, authorities said.
Because of Mangan's prior conviction, he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, according to authorities.

His sentencing is set for Oct. 21, 2025.
