Federal NRC To Present Webinar On Oyster Creek Shutdown On July 2

Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires registration for the online event, spokesman says

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - Confused about just how the Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant will be shut down over the next 60 years?

Then watch the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission's webinar, which will explain the complicated process on July 2. The event will provide key facts about the process and how the NRC will regulate the plant's decommissioning through on-site inspections and reviews, NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said.

The webinar will begin at 1 p.m. Participants will be able to view slides prepared by NRC staff
and ask questions in writing through a webpage set up to host the session.

The NRC will also hold a public meeting in Lacey Township on July 17 to discuss and accept public comments on the Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report (PSDAR) for Oyster Creek submitted by Exelon.

Exelon plans to shutdown Oyster Creek this fall, at the end of the station's current fuel cycle, said spokesperson Maria Hudson.

"We have selected mid-September for the timing of the start of the defueling outage," she said.

Oyster Creek is the oldest nuclear plant in the United States. It went online on Dec. 23, 1969.
