Lacey Blizzard Warning: Plowing Reminder, Flooding Alert

Lacey police are urging residents to stay off the roads, and to be prepared for the possibility of coastal flooding Saturday morning.

LACEY, NJ — With a blizzard warning in effect for Ocean County and forecasters predicting up to 18 inches of snow and strong winds, Lacey Township officials have issued several reminders to residents ahead of the storm.

A blizzard warning is in effect for Ocean County from 7 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Saturday, with a potential for 12 to 18 inches of snow and winds gusting as high as 50 mph. In addition, coastal flooding is anticipated in areas that flood often during the hours before and after high tide Saturday morning.

Gov. Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency that took effect at 5 p.m. Friday.

Lacey Township police are urging residents to avoid driving and make sure they clear vehicles and basketball hoops off the roads to allow for more efficient plowing.

"Travel could be very difficult to impossible," the National Weather Service said, as wind whips the snow, which could significantly reduce visibility. The winds also could bring down tree branches.

"Please remember to remove all parked vehicles from snow-covered roadways in Lacey Township as required by ordinance," officials said. "Keeping the roadways clear during and after a snow fall is necessary so the Lacey Township Department of Public Works can effectively clear the snow from the streets."

For waterfront areas, coastal flooding of up to a half-foot of water above ground level is anticipated for the low-lying areas near shorelines around the time of high tide Saturday morning.

"Do not leave your vehicle at a location that is prone to tidal flooding," the National Weather Service said. "Do not drive your vehicle through flood waters. The water may be deeper than you think it is. You will be putting yourself in danger and your vehicle may be damaged, leading to costly repairs."
