Lacey Declares National Problem Gambling Awareness Week

March 3 through March 9 is dedicated to educating the public and policymakers on problem gambling

Lacey Township has declared the week of March 3 through March 9 National Problem Gambling Awareness Week.

The Committee presented a proclamation to Patricia Healy designating the week as such on Thursday night.

“Gambling is becoming a national epidemic,” said Healy, a local therapist. “Most people can gamble recreationally but if you have a pathological gambling disorder, you’re going to lose a lot. You’re going to lose your house, your wife, your kids, your cars, your husband.”

National Problem Gambling Awareness Week was created to educate the public and policymakers of the financial effect of problem gambling, the proclamation said. Gambling is a public health issue affecting millions of Americans of all ages, races and backgrounds.

Numerous organizations have dedicated its efforts to education and treatment, the proclamation said.
