Lacey Middle School Closed Again On Wednesday In Fire Aftermath

A small fire broke out in science classroom on Tuesday, cleanup still ongoing, school officials say

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - The Lacey Township Middle School will be closed again on Wednesday as the cleanup from a small fire in a second floor science classroom continues, Principal Jason R. King said.

"The school’s fire suppression system was able to extinguish the fire quickly, minimizing damage," he said. "Unfortunately, due to continuing remediation measures, Lacey Township Middle School will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, April 25."

Students will make up Wednesday on Thursday, June 21, he said.

King asked that parents continue to monitor the district's website.

Superintendent Craig Wigley described the blaze as a "small, smoldering, contained fire in an upstairs classroom that occurred before students arrived.

"The exact cause is under investigation," Wigley said. "Most importantly the suppression system worked correctly and no one was at risk."

The Middle School students were dropped off at the Lacey High School, then had an early dismissal on Tuesday.

The Forked River Fire Department along with the Lanoka Harbor Fire Department extinguished the remainder of the fire, which was isolated to a small portion of the classroom, Lacey Capt. Patrick Ganley said.

"Minimal fire and smoke damage was reported, however as a result of the sprinkler system activation, there was a significant amount of water in the classroom and the surrounding areas that needed to be cleaned," he said.
