Lacey Middle School To Reopen On Thursday After Fire

The school has been closed since Tuesday, when a small fire broke out in a second floor classroom

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ The Lacey Township Middle School will be open for business on Thursday, two days after a small fire was discovered smoldering in a science classroom on the second floor.

Superintendent Craig Wigley has described the blaze as a "small, smoldering, contained fire in an upstairs classroom that occurred before students arrived."

"The exact cause is under investigation," Wigley has said. "Most importantly the suppression system worked correctly and no one was at risk."

"Minimal fire and smoke damage was reported, however as a result of the sprinkler system activation, there was a significant amount of water in the classroom and the surrounding areas that needed to be cleaned," Capt. Patrick Ganley has said.

The Forked River Fire Department along with the Lanoka Harbor Fire Department extinguished the remainder of the fire, which was isolated to a small portion of the classroom, Ganley said.

The building on Denton Avenue in Forked River was unoccupied when the blaze was discovered at 6:39 a.m. on Tuesday, which activated the fire suppression system.
