Cub Scouts from first to fifth grade participated in the annual Pinewood Derby

When January comes around, Lacey's Cub Scouts of Pack 35 are in full force preparing for the Pinewood Derby.

Recieving kits in December, the boys have a month to work on their cars. On Jan. 19, Cub Scouts from first to fifth grade came together at the Lanoka Harbor Firehouse to compete.

Cubmaster Paul Devaney warned the boys that if their cars didn't go as fast as they'd like, it was because their parents weren't cheering loud enough.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement, as each rank began their races.

Each boy raced six times, once on each lane of the track to keep it fair.

Designs varied, as always. A Restore the Shore pick up truck with a Christmas tree and a shovel in the back, reminding us to "Do our part." A jet plane, a party puppy, a stapler, spider man, assorted race cars, a fire truck and even a sneaker was entered this year.

The very first Pinewood Derby Car Race was held at the Manhattan Beach Scout House in 1953, and every year since, it has become a time honored tradition, with boys and their parents working to build their cars all weighing less than 5 ounces and less than 7 inches long.
