First Day Hikes Kick Off 2026 At Double Trouble, Island Beach
Start the new year and the nation's 250th anniversary with free, guided hikes at New Jersey's state parks.
BERKELEY, NJ — Start the new year on the right foot - literally - with First Day hikes at New Jersey's state parks and beaches.
The coming year marks the 250th, or semiquincentennial, anniversary of the United States, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Festivities throughout the year will take place across New Jersey and the nation, beginning in the Garden State with the annual First Day Hikes event, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
“More than ever, this year’s First Day Hikes are an opportunity to get outdoors and appreciate nature by visiting our parks and forests, some of which bore witness to the American Revolution and fight for freedom,” said Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette. “Spending time with family and friends while enjoying the beauty of our environment is one of the best ways to appreciate the diverse landscapes of New Jersey.”
