Red Cross Deploys Lacey Woman to Gulf Region in Response to Hurricane Isaac

A Lacey woman was deployed to Alabama by the American Red Cross South Jersey Region in response to Hurricane Isaac, spokeswoman Laura Steinmetz said.

Alabama got soaked but the extent of damage was costal residents scooping sand off beach streets and having power restored, a Huffington Post article reported. Low-lying areas along the coast experienced scattered blackouts and minor road flooding.

The American Red Cross South Jersey Region, which encompasses all counties south of Monmouth, deployed 13 disaster response workers across the Gulf States including Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, a news release said. There are a total of 33 disaster responders representing New Jersey.

The Red Cross could not yet release the name of the Lacey woman, Steinmetz said.

“Our disaster response workers are ready to meet the challenges of this large scale response,” said Nancy Orlando, Regional CEO of the South Jersey Region. “Throughout the year, volunteers and staff participate in training exercises and drills and work with the state, county and local civic organizations to prepare for and respond to national disaster relief operations like Hurricane Isaac.”

As of Tuesday, Aug. 28, 52 shelters were opened across five states housing nearly 800 evacuees, the news release said.

The Red Cross has trailers of relief supplies pre-positioned in the area and has sent out additional supplies. There are 187 Red Cross emergency response vehicles ready to move in and 311,000 ready-to-eat meals and kitchen support trailers in the area.
