Schoolhouse Bell Returns to Lacey Museum

After decades at the Forked River School, the bell was returned to its original home

The schoolhouse bell was recently returned to its rightful home at the Lacey Historical Society after spending decades at the Forked River School.

The bell, which followed the children to the Forked River School when it was constructed, was displayed at the elementary school’s 60th anniversary celebration in April.

“With everyone's thoughtfulness and cooperation, the bell was returned to its home in the Schoolhouse Museum, said Ellie Greco, member of the Historical Society.

The bell originally hung in the Forked River one-room schoohouse, which is now the museum, calling the kids to school each morning, said Ellie Greco, member of the Historical Society.

It is believed that the bell rang at least twice a day at the Forked River School as well — before school and after lunch, she said.

“The bell represents our school district’s history. From the days of the one room school houses to the Lacey Township School District we know today,” Principal Eric Fiedler said. “All of the students and staff are very proud being a part of the oldest operating school in the district.”
