LAKEWOOD, NJ — Authorities say a Lakewood man has died of injuries he suffered in a Route 9 crash on Wednesday morning.

A second man was taken to the hospital with a broken leg, Lakewood Police Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said Thursday.

Mark Mandel, 32, died at the scene of the crash that happened shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, Staffordsmith said. Lifesaving measures were attempted but Mandel was pronounced dead just before 8:30 a.m., he said.

Mandel was driving a 2008 Chevy Impala south on Route 9 and was trying to turn left onto Courtney Road when he turned into the path of a 2012 Infiniti G37 driven by Alejandro Huerta Arias of Lakewood, who was driving north on Route 9, Staffordsmith said.

The force of the impact sent Huerta Arias's car into a traffic signal, which disabled the signal, Staffordsmith said. The damage to his car required Lakewood firefighters and EMS to extricate him before Huerta Arias could be taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment of the broken leg, Staffordsmith said.
