Route 70 Crash Injures Toms River Police Officer On Motorcycle: Police

The officer was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment, officials said.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Toms River police officer was injured in a motorcycle crash on Route 70 on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Lakewood Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said authorities were investigating the crash that involved a police officer on a motorcycle.

Jillian Messina, media relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department, said it was a Toms River police officer who was on duty at the time of the crash, which happened just over the border in Lakewood, where New Hampshire Avenue and Route 70 intersect.

She said the officer was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center; the medivac landing zone was at Citta Elementary School, which was the reason for the Route 9-Cox Cro Road traffic alert, she said.

Staffordsmith referred further questions to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, which was handling the investigation.
