Grist Mill Archaeological Findings Subject of Talk

The recent archaeological investigation of the Henry Phillips grist mill will be the topic of an evening presentation at Howell Living History Farm on Friday, Oct. 26.  

The mill, which appears on early maps of the Pleasant Valley area, served farmers from the time of the Revolution through the first decades of the 19th century. Excavation of the mill site was completed this summer by Hunter Research of Trenton through a project partially funded with a grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust.

Archaeologist Richard Hunter will explain how the mill’s remains were discovered and what they tell us about its construction and operation. Howell Farm historian Larry Kidder will introduce the program with an illustrated talk on the background and significance of the mill in Pleasant Valley history.

The event will take place in Howell Farm’s visitor center, located on Valley Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 29, two miles south of Lambertville. (GPS destination is 70 Woodens Lane, Lambertville, N.J. 07530). Doors open at 7 p.m. Suggested donation is $3.
