Obituary: Eileen Mary Thornton, 51

A longtime Lawrence Township resident, she was laid to rest on July 14.

Eileen Mary Thornton, 51, beloved mother, daughter, sister and aunt, passed away peacefully at her home in Lawrence Township on July 11 surrounded by her family, following a two-year fight against breast cancer.

Pre-deceased by her father, Dr. Richard F. Thornton, and nephew, Peter W. Stanton, Eileen is survived by her son, Michael, and mother, Joan, both of Lawrence.

Surviving family members also include: sister and brother-in-law Susan and Mark Stanton of Chapel Hill, N.C.; sister Jo-Anne Thornton of Lawrence; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Eileen Thornton of Lawrence; seven nieces and nephews, Julianne, Melissa (James), Brian, Caroline, Patrick, Kathleen and Siobhan; and one grand-niece, Harper.

Born in New York City, Eileen lived in Lawrence Township since childhood. She graduated from Notre Dame High School and attended Trenton State College.

She established a successful career as a medical insurance underwriting executive. She was a licensed Insurance Producer in New Jersey and a member of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS). Eileen also was a regular participant and ardent supporter of the Special Olympics of New Jersey’s annual Polar Bear Plunge event.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 14 at . Interment followed in Saint Hedwig Cemetery, Ewing. At Eileen’s request, there were no calling hours.
