Rider Pitcher Named to ECAC Second Team

Pitcher Kurt Sowa's 11 wins were the 14th best in the country.

Rider University sophomore pitcher Kurt Sowa continues to rack up the honors.

Sowa was named to the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Second Team after leading the Broncs to a school-record 11 victories (11-1) and going undefeated (7-0) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. His 11 wins were the 14th best in the country.

He allowed 5.79 hits per nine innings pitched, which was the 10th best in the nation. Opponents batted .180 against Sowa. He struck out 54 batters in 79 innings pitched. He pitched two complete games, including a shutout.

He is 16-5 in his two years at Rider.

In addition to his ECAC second-team honors, Sowa was the MAAC Pitcher of the Year, a first-team all-New Jersey selection, an American Baseball Coaches/RAWLINGS Second Team All-East Region honoree and was a member of the MAAC All-Academic team.

The team was 35-22 overall, and 18-6 in conference play.

Rider was the top seed in the conference tournament, but failed to win the MAAC championship this year, falling to Canisius and Siena in the double-elimination tournament.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, the ECAC is the largest conference in the country, encompassing over 300 schools and multiple athletic conferences at all three levels of NCAA play.
