As Temperatures Soar, Mercer Co. Sheriff Shares Hot Car Safety Tips

Mercer County Sheriff is reminding residents to keep children and pets safe.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey is only midway through the summer and already Mercer County and the surrounding regions are experiencing excessive heat warnings and advisories.

And in weather like this, the inside of a car can act like an oven and very quickly become deadly.

Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler and the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office are teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to avoid childhood deaths by reminding parents and caregivers not to leave a child in a hot car.

The Sheriff’s Office has shared some safety tips with residents:

  • Never leave a child unattended in a car. The same goes for pets
  • Commit to memory to always check the back seat when exiting your car. This simple act can save lives and prevent tragic accidents.
  • Look again before you lock. Heat-related deaths are preventable. Again, this simple action can make a significant difference.

"As we navigate through the rest of the summer, remember that the inside of a car can turn into a deadly oven in just a matter of minutes," Kemler said.
